Summary

The first Compendium produced by Eawag (Department Sandec) and WSSCC in 2008 went a long way towards this objective. It provides knowledge on a wide range of sanitation technologies without bias and/or agenda, and helped to increase the recognition that a fully functioning sanitation ‘chain’ must link toilets to a treatment facility via an operational collection and transportation system. It also presented resource recovery and reuse options as a necessary objective for the sustainable management of excreta. In recent years, the Compendium has become the most popular technical compilation in the sanitation sector and is widely acclaimed by a large audience as an international reference tool. This expanded second edition provides updates and presents information about an increased range of technologies and will be an important resource for stakeholders in their decision making planning process. The eCompendium version allows for improved on-line access to the information and flexibility of use, and makes updating easier.
