Timber as a construction material in humanitarian operations

UN OCHA
Guideline, English, 73 pages

Summary

Huge quantities of timber costing millions of dollars are consumed in humanitarian relief and reconstruction programmes. Poorly planned timber procurement can result in significant delays in responses to people’s needs, environmental degradation and organisational financial and operational inefficiency. The 'humanitarian timber' project aims to develop a practical consensus-based field guide to help humanitarian workers with the use, specification and procurement of timber. The guide will focus on timber and provide additional information on bamboo, coconut timber and timber derivatives. The guide will be published in late 2008. The guide has been reviewed at peer reviews and by email.
