Ecuador 2016–2018 direct action

Main project partners were the national vocational training centers & authorities (SECAP, SENESCYT), the municipality of Pedernales in the affected costal area and also ECOSUR, a local NGO striving to make the training on confined masonry and other earthquake resistant building methods into one of their core competencies.

The project followed a 7.8-magnitude earthquake which struck northern Ecuador on 16 April 2016. SDC’s expertise was transferred to national counterparts in the following three domains:

  • Earthquake resistant Confined Masonry construction technique.
  • Practical training programes for workers (masons) through train-the-trainer schemes.
  • Development and dissemination of visual communication and education material for professionals and non-professionals.
